Portsmouth Football Shirts
Portsmouth Football Club is called Pompey and sometimes The Blues and their fans are called the Blue Army. Portsmouth is the current holder of the esteemed FA Cup. Their home colours are blue and a gold and the away colours are white with blue. Third colours are black and gold. The club’s emblem is a gold star and crescent on a blue shield and is said to have come from the time King Richard I granted the city a crescent of gold on a shade of azure, with a blazing star. This story contradicts those who say the emblem is connected with Islam.
Portsmouth has always played their home games at Fratton Park, in Portsmouth. There are plans in the works for a new stadium, however, to be located at Horsea Island. Portsmouth hopes to have the stadium running by 2011. Supporters of the club are known to chant the Pompey Chimes, which is to the tune of Westminster Chimes. The chant is Play up Pompey, Pompey play up.
Portsmouth used to have some trouble with hooliganism, but that was mainly in the 70’s and 80’s. They were called the 6:57 crew because that was the time that the Portsmouth-London Waterloo train ran, on which they rode. Portsmouth also has the record of the most arrests made in one match and that was against rivals Southampton. It was called Pompey mania.
